Lake Description:
Lake Linné, Svalbard. This glacier-fed lake records ice-free conditions during the early Holocene, the onset of Neoglaciation around 4000 yr ago, and a dramatic ice expansion during the LIA (Werner, 1988; Svendsen et al., 1989; Mangerud and Svendsen, 1990; Snyder et al., 2000). The lake and its glaciated catchment are presently the focus of intense monitoring as part of the Svalbard NSF-REU project. The goal is to calibrate the annual sediment record and to better interpret the climatic significance of late Holocene lamination stratigraphy. Laminae thickness and texture, combined with BSi abundance will be analyzed to reconstruct glacier mass balance and climate.
