Lake Description:
Kekertalujuak and Birch lakes, E Baffin Island. Prior research at millennial resolution (Wolfe et al., 2000b; Wolfe, 2002, 2003; Miller et al., 2004) aid the interpretation of proxies at higher resolution. Birch Lake is surrounded by a disjunct northern outlier of dwarf birch, expected to be sensitive to climate fluctuations. Climate inferences based on pollen from Birch Lake at 30-60 yr increments indicate a first-order decrease in mean July temperature of about 1 °C over the past 3000 yr (Fréchette, unpub. data). We will analyze chironomids and secondary proxies to compare with the pollen results. Both lakes are <100 km from Donard Lake and will provide inter-lake comparison between varved and non-varved lakes.
