International Arctic Buoy Program (IABP)

PI: Ignatius Rigor, University of Washington

  • Coordination with operators of non-Argos buoy programs and other field operations;
  • Liaise with the Coordinators, Principal Investigators and Managers of individual Arctic Buoy Programs;
  • Develop a deployment strategy to maintain an optimal buoy network in the Arctic; coordinate opportunities for buoy deployment;
  • Liaise with NAVOCEANO and other deployment services regarding specific deployments;
  • Seek deployment of opportunities support from other Arctic projects and operators;
  • Prepare an annual summary of resources committed to the Program;
  • Arrange for the purchase of buoys and ancillary equipment as authorized;
  • Arrange for the payment of expenses for Argos data acquisition and Argos processing fees as authorized;
  • Organize the annual meeting of Participants, present a report of the preceding year’s activities, and prepare a plan for the following year;
  • Promote the International Arctic Buoy Program to potential participants;
  • Supervise the work to be performed under the IABP contract, ensuring that all contractual obligations are met;
  • Review and implement recommendations made by the Coordinator or others
