Charles Wohlforth, a lifelong Alaska resident, is the author of several books and numerous magazine articles for publications such as The New Republic, Outside, and National Wildlife. After graduating from Princeton University with a degree in English in 1986 he became a newspaper reporter. He was lead reporter on the Exxon Valdez oil spill for the Anchorage Daily News and in 1993 he became a full-time freelance writer. He also served on the Anchorage Assembly from 1993 to 1999, representing the downtown area.

Wohlforth most recently authored The Whale and the Supercomputer: On the Northern Front of Climate Change. This book, written for a general audience, explores Arctic climate change from the perspective of Eskimo whalers and scientific researchers in Barrow, Alaska. Wohlforth illustrates the challenges and rewards resulting from the knowledge exchange between these two cultures, and delves into broader social issues concerning global warming.

Wohlforth is an experienced public speaker. He has presented slide lectures on Inupiat whaling, science, and climate change more than 20 times at institutions such as Princeton, Dartmouth, the University of Washington, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and at the ARCUS 16 th Annual Meeting. He is interested in speaking at academic and graduate seminars and to the general public. His presentations focus on The Whale and the Supercomputer: On the Northern Front of Climate Change and include a slide show depicting Inupiat whaling and arctic scientific fieldwork.
