Oceanography is a 'cool' subject
and I enjoy conveying my enthusiasm for the science
to kids.
Steve Okkonen is a research assistant professor of
Marine Science affiliated with the Institute of
Marine Science, University of Alaska Fairbanks. His
research interests include polar and sub-polar
oceanography, circulation variability, and satellite
remote sensing of the oceans. Okkonen received a B.S.
in Environmental Sciences Engineering from the
University of Michigan in 1976 and a Ph.D. in
Physical Oceanography from the University of Alaska
Fairbanks in 1993.
Dr. Okkonen is a former teacher who taught in rural
Alaska public schools during the 1970s and 1980s. He
is interested in addressing primarily school
audiences and the general public through the Program.
He is least available to participate in the Program
in the summer months.
His lecture topics include:

- Using satellites to study the ocean
- Bering Sea oceanography
- Gulf of Alaska oceanography
