    Ocean-Cryosphere Interactions

The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland seeks two PhD students in
the field of ocean-cryosphere interactions. This is a three-year
position based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The successful candidates will study Holocene marine sediment cores from
Greenland; ocean-cryosphere interactions focusing on major outlet
glaciers on Greenland. The affiliated project is entitled 'Past and
Future dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet: what is the ocean hiding?'
The project's overall goal is to investigate past outlet glacier
activity and possible ocean forcing involved as resulting from sea ice
variability and changes in inflow of warm subsurface water at various
time scales.

Candidates should be experienced in the field of marine geology, to
analyze sediment cores obtained from a diverse set of Greenlandic fjords
and contribute with reconstructions of Holocene glacier and ocean
changes. The position may be expected to participate in fieldwork at sea.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks invites applications for a
postdoctoral research scientist in the field of terrestrial ecology.
This is fixed-term position for a duration of two years, and will be
based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will conduct modeling studies in Alaska and
western Canada as part of projects to assess biogeochemistry and climate
feedbacks of terrestrial ecosystems in this region. Studies will include
the development, parameterization, testing, analysis, and application of
models that simulate the vegetation and carbon dynamics of ecosystems in
Arctic tundra and boreal ecosystems. The position may also entail using
resource-specific impact models to assess the effects of climate change
based on model outputs on specific natural resources and ecosystem
services.

Applications must have a PhD degree (already received or awaiting
receipt with all requirements fulfilled). Training in earth system
science or biogeochemistry, research experience in modeling vegetation
dynamics or biogeochemistry, and skills in data analysis and computer
programming are required.

    Mixing and Stratification in Hudson Bay

The Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS), Faculty of Environment,
Earth, and Resources, at the University of Manitoba invites applications
for a PhD or MSc student position on mixing and stratification in the
Hudson Bay. The position will be based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

The successful candidate will investigate mixing and re-stratification
due to tidal forcing, air-ice-sea interactions, and CDOM and
sediment-rich river discharge within Hudson Bay. The position will join
a recently funded four-year project whose overarching goal is to provide
a scientific basis to separate the relative effects of climate change
from those of hydroelectric regulation of freshwater on changing
physical, biological and biogeochemical conditions in Hudson Bay. As the
largest continental shelf sea in the world, Hudson Bay receives an
annual freshwater loading of about 760 km3 from more than 42 rivers
within a drainage basin of over 3*106 km2 in area. An even larger
seasonal freshwater flux, estimated at 1200 km3 or more, is withdrawn
from or added to the water column by the formation or decay of sea ice.
The research will involve participation in fieldwork that will include
the deployment and retrieval of oceanographic moorings and in-situ
observations onboard the icebreaker CCGS Amundsen and coastal locations.
