The University of Washington's College of the Environment (CoEnv),
Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and Quaternary Research Center (QRC)
seek Postdoctoral Research Associates. The positions will be based in
Seattle, Washington.
Positions are available for postdocs with interests in the polar regions
to conduct research and contribute to the intellectual life of the newly
established, cross-campus Future of Ice Initiative (FoI)
(http://ice.washington.edu). Applicants are expected to define a
research plan that fits within the broad program areas of the QRC or APL
and includes collaborations with other FoI partner units at UW, such as
Oceanography, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, Marine Affairs, Earth and
Space Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental and Forest Sciences,
Anthropology, Law, and the Jackson School of International Studies.
A PhD less than 4 years prior to the time of employment is required.
Applicants are asked to submit: (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a
publication list, (3) a brief proposal (no more than 1500 words)
describing research to be pursued during a two-year tenure at the UW,
(4) the names and contact information of four individuals who can
provide a letter of reference. In addition, a letter of support from a
prospective mentor in one of the participating UW units is encouraged.

- Northern Arizona University seeks PhD and MS Candidates
Ecosystem Ecology

The Center for Ecosystem Science in Society (Ecoss) at Northern Arizona
University seeks PhD and MS candidates in ecosystem ecology. The
positions will be based in Flagstaff, Arizona.
The Ecoss mission is to conduct high-impact, innovative research on
ecosystems and how they respond to and shape environmental change, to
train next-gen scientists, and to communicate discovery and its
relevance to people. Research opportunities are available in the
following areas linked to specific Ecoss faculty:
- The impact of climate change on Alaskan ecosystems, including
effects of changing fire regime and permafrost thaw on vegetation
dynamics, plant-soil-microbial interactions, nutrient and carbon
cycling, and ecosystem services. M. Mack, T. Schuur
- The effects of environmental change on soil carbon and nutrient
cycling, and the physiological, population and community ecology of
soil microorganisms. B. Hungate, P. Dijkstra, E. Schwartz
- Freshwater ecology, including the science of river restoration and
dam removal, terrestrial aquatic interactions and food web ecology.
J. Marks
- Exploring the interaction of water and carbon metabolism in
diverse studies ranging from the limits to height growth of the
world's tallest trees to drought responses of soil microorganisms.

- University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks Assistant Professor
Chemical Oceanography

The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks candidates for a tenure-track assistant
professor position in chemical oceanography. The position will be based
in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Specialties of interest include ocean acidification, marine inorganic
carbon chemistry, carbon biogeochemistry, carbon cycle-climate
interactions, isotope biogeochemistry, and evaluation of the biological
impact of ocean acidification. UAF is particularly interested in
applicants whose research plan involves the new ice-capable, Global
Class Research Vessel Sikuliaq.
Applicants must hold a PhD in oceanography or closely related
discipline, and preferably have postdoctoral and teaching experience.
The position requires research, education, and service that support
Alaska's ocean resources and the communities that rely on them. The
successful candidate will be expected to teach core and/or develop
specialty oceanography courses for the graduate and undergraduate
academic programs, develop a vigorous externally-funded research
program, and mentor graduate students.

- Gates of the Arctic National Park seeks Intern
Brooks Range Modeling
Fairbanks, Alaska
Gates of the Arctic National Park seeks an intern for summer 2015. The
position will be based out of Fairbanks, Alaska.
This position will help inform understanding of past cultures of the
central Brooks Range. Gates of the Arctic National Park is offering a
paid internship for summer 2015 to develop a predictive model of snow
patches with high potential for archaeological and paleoecological
discoveries. The internship can include traditional landscape use
interviews in Anaktuvuk Pass as well as fieldwork to test the model.
Applicants should have experience in geospatial modeling, analysis, and
data management. Early-career graduate students and advanced
undergraduates are encouraged to apply.
