Appointment of Dr. Eric Saltzman
Section Head for Arctic Sciences in the Division of Polar Programs

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Eric Saltzman to the
position of Section Head, Arctic Sciences (ARC) in the Division of Polar
Programs, Geosciences Directorate. He will begin his service at NSF on
15 September 2014.

Dr. Saltzman will be joining NSF from the University of California,
Irvine where he holds joint appointments as Professor in Departments of
Earth System Science and Chemistry.

Dr. Saltzman is a widely recognized leader in the field of atmospheric
science. He has published over 130 articles on various aspects of
atmospheric chemistry, including marine aerosols, air/sea gas exchange,
photochemical cycling, and developing atmospheric histories of
climate-active trace gases. Saltzman is active in international
scientific coordination, serving as Chair of the international Surface
Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Project (SOLAS), and is a Fellow of the American
Geophysical Union. He has also served as the Chair of the NSF Office of
Polar Programs Advisory Committee.

Dr. Saltzman earned his B.S. in Geology from the University of Rochester
and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Oceanography from University of Miami. He was
a Professor at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
at the University of Miami and served as Chair of the Division of Marine
and Atmospheric Chemistry. He previously served at NSF under an IPA
appointment as a Program Manager for Atmospheric Chemistry. He has also
served as Chair of the Department of Earth System Science at the
University of California, Irvine.

We enthusiastically welcome Dr. Saltzman back to NSF and look forward to
working with him to advance the frontiers of knowledge in the Arctic. We
are confident that Dr. Saltzman will provide outstanding leadership for
the diverse areas of research covered in the Arctic as well as
contribute to the Polar Team, other areas at NSF and in the interagency
and international realms. He replaces Mr. Simon Stephenson who is
currently on detail at OSTP.
