Interested parties are invited to submit comments on the draft of the
updated Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) Master Plan. This update
is being conducted by UMIAQ, the organization assigned to manage the BEO
by the Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation (UIC).
The BEO consists of 7,466 acres of arctic slope tundra and shoreline
east of Barrow, Alaska set aside by the UIC to support scientific
research. It was zoned as a Scientific Research District in 2003 by the
North Slope Borough after adoption of the original Master Plan. The
document was intended to provide a 10-year outlook on appropriate use
and development of the BEO. UMIAQ is in the process of updating the
Master Plan to guide its stewardship for the next decade.
The BEO Master Plan draft is available for download online, at:
http://www.polarfield.com/barrow/beo/. For reference, the original
Master Plan is also included on the website. The revised draft will be
presented to the UIC Board of Directors and the North Slope Borough
Planning Commission for approval at their respective December meetings.
