Outreach Activities

The euphausiid modeling component of SNACS was featured in a presentation by Y. Spitz at the Oregon State University College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Science 50th anniversary open house, (July 2009).

High school teachers Jeff Manker (Gilroy, CA) and Kirk Beckendorf (Blanco TX) participated in the fieldwork in 2005 and 2006 through the ARMADA program out of the University of Rhode Island.

Boat captain Bill Kopplin was interviewed on the local Barrow radio station (KBRW).

Preliminary results of the field sampling were presented by Ashjian in Barrow at the BASC Schoolyard Saturdays science lecture series in September 2005 and 2007.

The field team worked with the San Francisco Exploratorium during their visit to Barrow in late August/early September, 2007.

The project was also written up in 2006 in WHOI's Oceanus Magazine that has broad dissemination via the web (http://www.whoi.edu/oceanus/viewArticle.do?id=11566).

The SNACS research was featured in a presentation to middle school students from Lexington MA in 2007, to 6th graders in Duxbury MA in 2009, to Barrow High School science students in Fall 2007, and to WHOI Summer Student Undergraduate Fellows in 2007.

Ashjian presented the preliminary results and/or upcoming field season plans to the Barrow Whaling Captains Association and local whalers in September 2005, January 2006, June 2007, and falls of 2008 and 2009.

Ashjian spoke to a delegation of congressional aides on the SNACS project and the ongoing field efforts on August 31, 2007 in Barrow AK.

In May 2007, the Heads of Research Councils for the Group of Eight (including Arden Bement, NSF Director) attended a Day of Science at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The SNACS research was featured in a presentation by Ashjian entitled "Arctic Ecosystems from Plankton to Native Peoples".
