Svalbard, sometimes called Spitsbergen, is a territory of Norway.
The
lead agency for research matters in Svalbard is the Norwegian
Polar Institute. The institute, based in Tromsø, maintains
an office in Longyearbyen and runs research stations in Svalbard,
including the Ny-Ålesund Large-Scale Facility for Arctic Environmental
Research (Ny-Ålesund
