[report cover]Opportunities for Collaboration Between the United States and Norway in Arctic Research

11 September 2000

Dear Arctic Colleague,

ARCUS announces the release of Opportunities for Collaboration Between the United States and Norway in Arctic Research: A Workshop Report. The report is available on request through ARCUS: phone (907) 474-1600, fax (907) 474-1604, or e-mail subscriptions@arcus.org, or you may download an electronic copy here (see left).

In August 1999, representatives from the U.S. and Norwegian research community met in Svalbard to discuss a range of possibilities for enhanced collaborative research. This workshop was initiated to increase U.S.-Norwegian collaborations in arctic research and promote collaborative development and use of research infrastructure. Workshop participants discussed research needs and priorities and developed recommendations for potential collaboration on research in the Arctic, emphasizing Svalbard as a research platform.

Reports from working groups in the areas of upper and lower atmosphere, oceanography and geophysics, paleoenvironmental research, and biology were combined with input from social scientists and from the larger arctic research community to develop Opportunities for Collaboration Between the United States and Norway in Arctic Research. Drafts of this document were circulated for community review. The editors thank all who contributed to this report for their suggestions and participation in this important arctic research community effort.
