Arctic Science Education Report

The report, Arctic Science Education: Recommendations from the Working Group on Arctic Science Education to the National Science Foundation, is now available.

In March 2000, a group of scientists, educators, and Indigenous education specialists came together, in Fairbanks, Alaska, to develop recommendations on improving scientific literacy through focusing on the arctic environment and cultures and arctic research.

The Arctic Science Education Working Group (ASEWG) was charged to develop a set of recommendations for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs Arctic Sciences Section to effectively integrate arctic science and education programs in ways that would fully involve arctic residents in the research and education process.

The resulting report specifically outlines approaches to support the development of programs in the Arctic integrating research and education and that will catalyze and improve collaborations between researchers and arctic residents.

The working group members thank all who contributed their ideas and expertise and also thank the NSF Arctic Sciences Section for requesting and supporting the assessment process and the development of these recommendations. Copies of the report are available on request through ARCUS at 907/474-1600 or arcus@arcus.org, or you may download an electronic copy.
