Diomede is located on the west coast of Little Diomede Island in the Bering Straits,
135 miles northwest of Nome, Alaska. It is only 2.5 miles from Big Diomede Island, Russia, and the international boundary lies between the two islands. It lies at approximately 65d 47m N Latitude, 169d 00m W Longitude.

"An Arctic Environmental Observatory in Bering Strait," funded with support from the National Science Foundation, is a cooperative research project involving scientists Lee Cooper and Jackie Grebmeier of the University of Tennessee, Gay Sheffield of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and Lou Codispoti of the University of Maryland.

Physical, chemical, and biological data will be collected automatically from water pumped into the school-based station from the depths of the Bering Strait. Some of the island residents will participate in the project by helping maintain the system and doing manual sampling. Local subsistence hunters will also collect marine mammals to be examined and cataloged as part of the long-term records for the site.

Dr. Lyn Gualtieri, of the Quaternary Research Center, University of Washington, has published research on the geology of Little Diomede Island. Details here.
