  1. UNIS seeks Full/Associate Professor
    Arctic Geophysics, Boundary Layer Meteorology
    Svalbard, Norway

The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) seeks to hire a full or
associate professor to the department of Arctic Geophsysics for a
position in large-scale meteorology. This full-time, permanent position
will be based in Svalbard, Norway.

The position will include research and teaching of the processes behind
the turbulent exchange of heat, momentum and matter between the
atmosphere and the ocean, sea ice, glaciers and tundra (all with and
without snow cover) in the Arctic. The appointed person will conduct
research within the scope and strategy of the Department of Arctic
Geophysics at UNIS and is expected to participate in the supervision of
master- and PhD students in cooperation with the Norwegian Universities.
The teaching affiliated with this position includes two courses in
meteorology linked to the department course strategy and the ACSI group
research activity.

The successful candidate will have a theoretical background within
boundary layer dynamics and exchange processes with emphasis on the
stable boundary layers; turbulence; air-cryosphere-sea interaction;
topographically induced phenomena; measuring techniques and data
analysis. Applicants for the position must be able to document their
qualifications as full or associate professor. To be considered for the
position of associate professor a PhD in meteorology, or its equivalent,
is the minimum requirement. Professor qualifications must be documented
as UNIS does not evaluate applicants for professorships. Furthermore,
the applicants' background from previous work on Svalbard and other
Arctic regions will be assessed as well as their pedagogic
qualifications. Applicants are also requested to document their
pedagogic qualifications and experience.

Application deadline: 1 March 2015.

  1. Uppsala University seeks PhD Student
    Arctic Ocean Magnetostratigraphy
    Uppsala, Sweden

Uppsala University seeks a PhD student for a position in Arctic Ocean
magnetostratigraphy. This four year, full-time position will be based in
Uppsala, Sweden.

The successful applicant will work on a suite of selected sediment cores
recently collected by expeditions to the Arctic Ocean, and use advanced
magnetic measurement infrastructure in Uppsala. The student will have
access to state-of-the-art paleomagnetic facilities at Lund University,
and may have the opportunity to sail on forthcoming expeditions to the
Arctic during the period of employment.

Applicants should have a university degree in Earth Sciences, Quaternary
Geology, Geophysics, Physical Geography or similar. Candidates should
also have a solid base in geochronology, stratigraphy and demonstrated
laboratory skills and computing. Knowledge of paleomagnetic methods and
their application will be a merit.

Application deadline: 15 February 2015.

  1. Multiple Positions Available at University of Manitoba
Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources
    Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

The Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources
Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) at the University of
Manitoba announces the availability of several positions. The
application deadline for all positions is 15 March 2015.

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Mercury Cycling in Arctic Coastal Marine Environments

CEOS is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate (up
to a four-year term) with exceptional academic standing to examine
mercury biogeochemistry within estuarine and marine environments of the
sub-Arctic Hudson Bay. The successful candidate will join a recently
funded project whose overarching objective is to characterize the
effects of varying river discharge on mercury cycling within Hudson Bay.
The research will involve both laboratory and fieldwork, including
research cruises onboard the icebreaker CCGS Amundsen.

PhD or MSc Student
Biogeochemical Tracers in Arctic Coastal Marine Environments

CEOS is seeking a highly motivated graduate student with exceptional
academic standing to examine various biogeochemical tracers (e.g.
mercury, radionuclides, organic carbon) within estuarine and marine
environments of the sub-Arctic Hudson Bay (Canada). The position is open
to PhD or MSc students. The successful candidate will join a recently
funded project whose overarching objective is to characterize the
effects of varying river discharge on mercury cycling within Hudson Bay.
The research will involve both laboratory and fieldwork including
research cruises onboard the research icebreaker, CCGS Amundsen

PhD Student
Sea Ice-Ocean Modeling in Hudson Bay, Canada

CEOS is seeking a highly motivated doctoral student in ice-ocean
modeling as part of a recently funded project that will look at the
relative contributions of climate change and hydro-electric regulation
to the variability and change of freshwater-marine coupling in the
Hudson Bay System. CEOS conducts multidisciplinary freshwater and marine
research in the Arctic, with a specific emphasis on environmental
change. This project is designed to explore the relative contributions
of climate change and regulation on sea ice and oceanographic conditions
in Hudson Bay.

PhD or MSc Student
Carbon Cycling in Arctic Coastal Marine Environments

CEOS is seeking a highly motivated graduate student with exceptional
academic standing to examine water carbon chemistry and associated
air-sea CO2 exchange within estuarine and marine environments of Hudson
Bay. This announcement is open for PhD or MSc opportunity. The
successful candidate(s) will join a funded project whose overarching
objective is to characterize the effects of varying river discharge on
carbon cycling within Hudson Bay. The research will involve fieldwork,
including research cruises onboard the icebreaker CCGS Amundsen

Postdoctoral Fellow
Northern Climate Change Modeling

CEOS is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral fellow with strong
academic experience in hydrology and hydrologic modeling to examine
freshwater inputs to Hudson Bay under climate change. The successful
candidate for this position will be working with the freshwater systems
team to quantify freshwater exports into Hudson Bay under climate
change, examining the relative effects of hydro-electric regulation and
climate on freshwater variability and quantity. Year one of
post-doctoral research involves performing a cluster analysis to derive
climate forcing for hydrologic projection, and initial setup of a
continental-scale hydrologic model for Hudson Bay. Candidates will work
in close collaboration with industry and will be expected to take a
leadership role in graduate student supervision, project management and
peer-reviewed publication.

To apply, please send a curriculum vitae, transcripts, a short statement
of relevant research experience and interests, and the contact information
for two referees to Tim Papakyriakou (Tim.Papakyriakou [at] umanitoba.ca).

Application deadline: 15 March 2015
