  1. National Research Council seeks Postdoctoral Fellow
Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate
    Washington, D.C.

The National Research Council (NRC) Board on Atmospheric Sciences and
Climate (BASC) seeks to hire a postdoctoral fellow.

This opportunity would allow a recent PhD student to spend a year
working at the interface of science and policy. The postdoc will support
several activities on a wide range of topics, including atmospheric
chemistry, subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting, geoengineering, and
global change research. In addition, the postdoc will likely be asked to
support activities of the Polar Research Board (PRB).

The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background in a
related field, but also be able to thrive in an interdisciplinary
environment. The NRC is looking for someone who is a quick learner, an
excellent communicator, and able to juggle multiple responsibilities.

The position will be open until filled.

  1. Dartmouth College seeks PhD Fellow
    Arctic Food Webs
    Hanover, New Hampshire

Dartmouth College has a PhD graduate fellowship available in the Ecology
and Evolutionary Biology Program at Dartmouth College. The position will
be based in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The successful candidate will study the structure and environmental
responsiveness of food webs in Arctic ecosystems. Work could involve a
comparative study of ecosystems in Greenland and northern Sweden.
Possible topic areas include effects from outbreaks of insect
herbivores, climatic effects on trophic interactions, and nutrient
linkages between terrestrial and aquatic systems.

Requirements include ability to conceive and conduct original research
within the umbrella of a larger project; enthusiasm for international
travel, field biology, and collaboration; and an interest in linkages
among ecology, evolution, ecosystems, and society. International
applications are welcome.

Application deadline: 1 December 2014.

To initiate an application, email a curriculum vitae and statement of
interest to Ross Virginia (Ross.A.Virginia [at] dartmouth.edu) and Matt Ayers
(Matthew.P.Ayres [at] dartmouth.edu). Graduate program applications must then
be completed by 1 December 2014 using the Dartmouth online application,
at: http://graduate.dartmouth.edu.

  1. CUNY Advanced Science Research Center
    Director and Faculty Positions Available
    Highlight: Faculty, Environmental CrossRoads Initiative
    City of New York

A number of positions are available at the City University of New York
(CUNY) Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC). These opportunities
range from advanced research scientists to research and laboratory
technicians to administrative and technical support staff. One
highlighted opportunity is a faculty position with the Environmental
CrossRoads Initiative.

The position seeks to catalyze innovation in urban systems research and
applications within the CUNY Environmental CrossRoads Initiative
(http://asrc.cuny.edu/crossroads). The successful candidate will have an
academic appointment at one of the senior CUNY colleges.

Applications must have a PhD degree in Environmental Sciences or
Engineering: Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Energy Analysis, Urban Systems,
Systems Analysis. Also required are the ability to teach successfully,
demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with
others for the good of the institution.

Other positions available include faculty positions in nanoscience or
structural biology and director positions in neuroscience and photonics.

  1. University of Washington seeks Two Faculty
Oceanography / Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
    Seattle, Washington

The College of the Environment at the University of Washington
(http://coenv.uw.edu) invites applications for two new tenure-track
assistant professor positions. Both positions will be based in Seattle,
Washington.

The successful candidates are expected to enhance the University of
Washington's multidisciplinary research in polar science, develop an
externally funded research program, mentor the next generation of
scientists, and contribute to rigorous edaucation serving an
increasingly diverse student population at the graduate and
undergraduate levels. The University of Washington promotes diversity
and inclusivity among our students, faculty, staff, and public; for each
of these faculty positions, we seek applicants who are committed to
these principles.

The first position, in the School of Oceanography, seeks a candidate who
will contribute to an understanding of biological processes and ongoing
changes in high-latitude (polar or subpolar) marine ecosystems. They are
particularly, thought not exclusively, interested in candidates whose
research focuses on the physiology, ecology, or biogeography of lower
trophic levels. Research approaches may include field observations,
remote sensing, laboratory experimentation, genomics and bioinformatics,
or modeling. Applicants should describe how their research and teaching
will enhance collaborative linkages between disciplines within the
School of Oceanography and among other partners in the Future of Ice
Initiative. Questions pertaining to this search can be addressed to Jody
Deming, Search Committee Chair (jdeming [at] uw.edu).

The second position, in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences,
seeks a candidate who will contribute to an understanding of ecological
processes and ongoing changes in high-latitude (polar or subpolar)
marine or freshwater ecosystems. The program seeks an ecologist whose
research focuses on basic and/or applied questions and may include, but
is not limited to, high latitude fisheries or broader ecosystem studies
across multiple trophic levels from zooplankton to seabirds and marine
mammals. Applicants should describe how their research and teaching will
enhance collaborative linkages within the School of Aquatic and Fishery
Sciences and among other partners in the Future of Ice Initiative.
Questions pertaining to this search can be addressed to Gordon
Holtgrieve, Search Committee member (gholt [at] uw.edu) until 19 November and
afterwards to George Hunt, Search Committee Chair (geohunt2 [at] uw.edu).

Application deadline: 15 December 2014.

To apply to either position, email (FoI [at] uw.edu) a curriculum vitae with
publication list, statements of research and teaching interests with
reference to diversity/inclusivity, and the names and contact
information of four references. Applications should clearly indicate the
position sought; i.e., in SAFS or in SO.
