The Reindeer Husbandry Section of the Nordic Association of Agricultural
Sciences announces a call for abstracts for the second seminar in a
series on Nordic reindeer husbandry. The seminar will convene 20-21
October 2014 at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland in Rovanieme,
Finland.
Extended deadline for abstract submissions: Monday, 1 September 2014.
The goal of the seminar is to promote research on reindeer husbandry
related issues in the Nordic countries. The goal of the seminar is to
discuss reindeer herding and land use activities at different levels and
identify needs for sustainable reindeer husbandry and for sustainable
co-management of land use between different interest groups in the
Nordic countries.
Session topics will include:
- Relations of reindeer herding and other land use activities;
- Reindeer herding in a changing environment;
- Predators and reindeer management;
- Sustainable and profitable reindeer management: challenges and
opportunities;
- Social and cultural security and sustainability of reindeer herding
livelihood; and
- Future prospects.

Organizers announce online availability of Antarctic Conservation
presentations for the XXXIII Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
(SCAR) Flipped Symposium. The symposium is scheduled during the 2014
Open Science Conference in Auckland, New Zealand and will convene from
8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 26 August 2014.
The Antarctic is one of the Earth's last great wildernesses. Recognizing
its unique position, the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the
Antarctic Treaty has designated Antarctica as " ... a natural reserve,
devoted to peace and science." At face value, therefore, the Antarctic
continent and the oceans and islands surrounding it are better protected
than almost anywhere else on earth. Recent developments suggest,
however, that this is too sanguine a characterization. The Antarctic is
facing several pressing conservation challenges. Addressing these
challenges requires informed diplomacy.
The goal of this symposium is to explore messages that are emerging from
the growing evidence-base and what may be done to improve the
conservation picture they are painting. The exploration will commence as
a series of brief presentations from a panel of contributors. It will
then be given full scope through substantive discussions between the
panel members and the audience.
