  1. Three Books
    Arctic Biodiversity Assessment:
Status and Trends, Synthesis, and Report for Policy Makers
    CAFF Secretariat
    Arctic Council

Three books arising from the Arctic Biodiversity Assessment report
completed by the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF)
Secretariat of the Arctic Council are now available.

The Arctic Biodiversity Assessment creates a baseline for use in global
and regional assessments of Arctic biodiversity which will inform and
guide future Arctic Council work; provides up-to-date knowledge gathered
from Scientific publications supplemented with insights from traditional
knowledge holders; identifies gaps in the data record; describes key
mechanisms driving change; and presents science-based suggestions for
action on addressing major pressures on Arctic biodiversity.

"Arctic Biodiversity Assessment: Status and trends in Arctic
biodiversity" is a comprehensive peer-reviewed report providing detailed
scientific information informed by traditional ecological knowledge and
is geared toward researchers, scientists, students, and managers who
need in-depth information on Arctic biodiversity.

"Arctic Biodiversity Assessment: Synthesis" is a summary of the main
findings of the assessment and is geared for managers, practitioners,
scientists, students, and others working to understand and conserve
Arctic biodiversity.

"Arctic Biodiversity Assessment: Report for policy makers" provides a
brief summary of the report as relevant for a policy- and
decision-making audience in government, industry, and scientific
circles. It includes nine key findings and 17 recommendations for policy.

  1. New Book
    North by Degree
    Edited by S. A. Kaplan and R. M. Peck
    American Philosophical Society

A new book entitled "North by Degree: New Perspectives on Arctic
Exploration" edited by Susan A. Kaplan and Robert M. Peck and published
by the American Philosophical Society is now available.

This book is a collection of papers on the history of the late
nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Arctic exploration. It
includes a selection of papers first presented in 2008 at an
international conference co-sponsored by Bowdoin College, the Academy of
Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, the American Philosophical Society,
and the Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science. The contributed
works examine the broader social, technological, and environmental
settings in which Arctic expeditions were conceived, carried out,
described, and understood by the public. Included selections also
examine an array of topics ranging from nationalism, to issues of race
and gender, to ways new technologies affected Arctic exploration. The
volume is illustrated with historic photographs.
