  1. PhD Position
    Biology Research
The Arctic Centre at University of Groningen
    Groningen, Netherlands

The Arctic Centre at the University of Groningen seeks candidates for a
PhD research position in a project entitled, "From historical data to a
prediction of the future for geese on the Arctic tundra." The position
is for one and one half years with possible extension for another two
and one half years. It will begin 1 May 2014 and is based in Groningen,
Netherlands.

The Arctic Centre has an interdisciplinary research focus on long-term
human-environment relations in polar regions. This project is part of a
program entitled, "Anthropogenic impact on Svalbard ecosystems."

The successful candidate will investigate the dynamics and structure of
an Arctic terrestrial food web with geese as the central element. The
PhD project focuses on the analysis of historical data and a multi-year
dataset of plant-herbivore interaction and introducing the dynamics of
predation into models of resource utilization, habitat selection, and
population dynamics. Field experiments and molecular techniques are
planned to support a better understanding of goose numbers and goose
distribution on Arctic tundra vegetation.

Application deadline: Thursday, 6 March 2014.

  1. PhD Fellowship
    Interdisciplinary Arctic Research
    University of Calgary
    Calgary, Canada

The Department of Archaeology at the University of Calgary, in
partnership with the Arctic Institute of North America (AINA), and
supported by University of Calgary Eyes High Doctoral Program, seeks
candidates for a PhD fellowship. The fellowship is intended for students
beginning a doctoral program in September 2014 or January 2015, is
funded for up to four years, available to Canadian citizens, permanent
residents, and foreign students, and is based in Calgary, Canada.

This interdisciplinary research position will focus on the social,
scientific, and environmental impacts of community-based monitoring
activities in the Arctic with combined emphasis on anthropology,
sociology, environmental science, policy studies, and geography. It is
aligned with the AINA's growing focus on northern sustainable
development and Arctic system observation and synthesis and the
University of Calgary's research themes of human dynamics in a changing
world and new earth and space technologies. Potential research topics
could include how local knowledge has informed scientific investigations
of changing Arctic system dynamics, how new observation technologies
have shaped community-based monitoring efforts, and assessing the
introduction and use of new observing technologies in remote and rural
communities.

The successful candidate must be a new PhD student to the University of
Calgary have an entering GPA of at least 3.5/4.0 or equivalent in the
last two years of study and be eligible for admission to a graduate
program at the University of Calgary.

Application deadline: Friday, 14 March 2014.

Applications; including a letter outlining research interests (five
pages maximum), academic and professional qualifications, a curriculum
vitae, unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and contact
information for three references; should be submitted via email to

  1. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
    Earth Observation and Remote Sensing
    Arctic University at UiT
    Tromso, Norway

The Faculty of Science and Technology at University of Tromso's (UiT)
Arctic University of Norway, seeks candidates for a postdoctoral
research fellowship in earth observation and remote sensing. The
position is offered for a fixed term of three years and is based in
Tromso, Norway.

The successful candidate shall conduct his/her work within the scope of
a project entitled, "Detection and Characterization of Anthropogenic Oil
Pollution in the Barents Sea by Synthetic Aperture Radar;" a joint
effort between UiT The Arctic University of Norway and Russian Academy
of Science, and their respective partners. The research fellow will work
on algorithm development, multi-sensor techniques, and information
retrieval from remote sensing measurements. It is desired that the
research conducted have an emphasis on synthetic aperture radar (SAR)
and emerging polar-metric SAR techniques, with application to petroleum
related pollution monitoring in the Barents Sea and the marginal ice
zone. Both theoretical and experimental work will be relevant. The
applicant shall submit a project proposal within the above-mentioned
scope. The research fellow may also be involved in the activities
related to the Barents Remote Sensing School, a research school for PhD
students at the Department of Physics and Technology.

Application deadline: Thursday, 20 March 2014.
